Reykjavik, 1999. A man is interrogated by the police. He was arrested the previous night after a fight. Stebbi can’t remember a thing about it – blind drunk again. In front of the police station smoking a cigarette, Stebbi meets his childhood friend Tóti, a no-nonsense guy with an enormous tattoo on his bald head, a goatee and frightful eyes. ‘If you have any problems, just give me a call,’ Tóti says, handing him a card. Then Stebbi finds himself in a world of tough guys, athletic drug dealers, stunning blondes, mountains of coke, truckloads of ecstasy and other designer drugs, robberies and slaughter. The frames are askew, sometimes in split-screen. The colour pallet of this adrenaline-pumping crime thriller is dominated by the black of the night, the white of the snow and the red of the blood that flows copiously. In a voice-over, Stebbi provides a dry commentary.

Marina is a social worker who works with battered women; she’s taking a few days off from work and spending time with her husband Ilya and friends Valery and Tanya at their vacation cottage in the country. Marina thinks she hears the cries of a woman in distress one evening, but the others think little of it, and Marina herself is distracted by her ongoing affair with Valery. As it happens, what Marina heard was a streetwalker being raped by three rogue police officers led by the good-looking but conscienceless Andrei, and when Marina crosses their path, she’s also assaulted by the cops. Several days later, Marina returns to the scene of the crime and finds Andrei in a nearby diner. However, rather than attacking him or bringing him to justice, Marina goes home with him, and the two fall into a perverse sexual relationship brought on by a variety of conflicting emotions she can’t articulate. Portret v Sumerkakh (aka Twilight Portrait) received its world premiere at the 2011 Kinotavr Open Russian Film Festival, where it became a subject of understandable controversy among both critics and audiences.

Acclaimed director Miguel Gomes returns with a sumptuous, eccentric two-part tale centered on Aurora, shown first as an impulsive, cantankerous elderly woman in present-day Lisbon. When Aurora is hospitalized, she sends her neighbor, Pilar, to pass word of her grave condition to Gian Luca, a man of which no one has ever heard her speak. Pilar’s quest to fulfill her friend’s wish transports us to Africa fifty years earlier, before the start of the Portuguese Colonial War. We see Aurora again, this time as the gorgeous, smoldering wife of a wealthy young farmer, involved in a forbidden love affair with Gian Luca, her husband’s best friend. Their moving, poetic tale is conveyed through the older Gian Luca’s suave voiceover, combined with the lush, melodious sounds of its heady, tropical setting, peppered with a soundtrack of Phil Spector songs.

It stars the veteran Spanish actor José Sacristán and the beautiful, young María Valverde. Director David Trueba is the younger brother of the celebrated Fernando Trueba, and a prominent writer and director in his own right.
On one hot day, a cultured and respected reporter arranges to meet a young journalism student in a café. He soon convinces her to return with him to a friend’s empty apartment. However, his seduction misfires and the pair become trapped together for the rest of the day in a locked bathroom.
Though the title refers to a specific time and place (one of political transformation), the drama and the questions it raises about desire, age and power are universal. Literally stripped bare, can the film’s two characters understand or even survive each other.

Plot / Synopsis:
The forces of nature speak to three young people in unusual ways in this impressionistic drama from director Angelos Frantzis. A woman and two men wander into a heavily wooded forest and spend the day and night exploring the surroundings. As they walk among the trees, the hills, and the streams, their exposure to the unspoiled beauties of nature, both inviting and forbidding, brings out a new side in the three friends, and they explore sexual and emotional sides of their relationships they never acknowledged before. Visually striking and employing very little dialogue, Mesa Sto Dasos (aka In the Woods) was shot using consumer-grade equipment – a still camera on movie capture setting and a laptop computer to record audio – and the limitations of the gear add to the film’s unique look, with richly saturated color and a visual grain not unlike small-gage film. In the Woods was an official selection at the 2010 Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Standing between them is the unyielding “Papa”, the head of the monastic order, who responds to Alina’s aggression with an ever more zealous dogmatism. He soon comes to believe that Alina has fallen prey to demonic possession, and it is his duty to chastise her soul. The only problem is that he fails to take account of the frailty of her body.
